Baby Barredo

Carmen (Baby) Barredo was co-founder of Repertory Philippines launched in 1967 with Zeneida (Bibot) Amador. For over fifty years, Baby has been in the forefront of Philippine Theater with an illustrious theatrical career that has spanned the gamut of genres from musicals to straight plays to classics. You name the play, Baby has appeared in it. She studied voice under Fides Asencio, Ines Zialcita, and many other noted voice teachers as well as music with Lucretia Kasilag. Daisy Avellana was her mentor in Drama. Baby is gifted with the genius of perfect pitch, that is why her love is to oversee musicals and has been the Musical Director for most of Repertory’s very numerous music productions. She studied voice in the University of Indiana, and then went on to complete Drama in the American Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in New York before coming back to Manila to co-found REP. Baby Barredo has received just about all the coveted dramatic and theatrical awards in the Philippines, too numerous to name. Today, she is the Grand Dame of Philippine Theater, and is Repertory’s Chairman-for-Life and Artistic Director Emeritus.

Mindy Perez-Rubio

Like a true Barredo, Mindy Barredo Perez-Rubio is a thespian. She is the sister of Baby (Carmen) Barredo and theater has always been in her blood, even if she did not get to act in too many REP plays. However, she appeared in many pre-REP productions with Father Reuter, Peque Gallaga and Buddy Paez like Camelot, Finian’s Rainbow, You Can’t Take it With You, Fiddler on the Roof, Riders to the Sea, and two of the earliest REP productions, A Children’s Hour and Slow Dance on the Killing Ground. Once she got married, theater was over as she devoted her time to family. Mindy is a music major, graduating with a degree in Piano and Choral Conducting from St. Scholastica’s College School of Music. She moved to California and for 30 years was involved in many philanthropic organizations. She brings her leadership expertise in running an organization to Repertory Philippines and her goal is to bring REP’s legacy forward through the 21st century and to continue to uphold its status as the premiere theater company in the country. Currently, Mindy is Chairman of the Makati Garden Club, a member of Holbrook-Palmer Park Foundation Board, Chairman of Grounds for the Manila Polo Club and Board of the San Francisco Symphony Mid-Peninsula League. She served as president of Peninsula Volunteers Inc., Atherton Dames and Wall Street Women, Chairman of Meals-On-Wheels South San Mateo County, Commissioner of Atherton Arts Council, and chaired numerous fund-raising events, among them Festival of Trees, Sacred Heart Schools Auction, Atherton’s Day at the Park, and numerous Peninsula Volunteer Gala Events. She is the recipient of several awards including the Gentry Award, Atherton Civic Interest League Award, and received a Plaque of appreciation from her alma mater, St. Scholastica’s College, for her work in restoring the historic St. Cecilia’s Hall. Mindy is married to Carlos Perez-Rubio and together they have five children and ten grandchildren.

Miguel Faustmann

Miguel is undoubtedly one of Philippine Theater’s most admired and respected actors. He has appeared in numerous films and televisions shows, as well. Some of his most important theatrical roles include Thenardier in LES MISÉRABLES, Juan Peron in EVITA, King Arthur in CAMELOT, Fagin in OLIVER!, Dr. Armstrong in TEN LITTLE INDIANS, Don Quixote in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Dr. Seward in DRACULA, Rene Gallimard in M. BUTTERFLY, Capt. Von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Ebenezer Scrooge in SCROOGE, Brutus in JULIUS CAESAR, and Petruchio in THE TAMING OF THE SHREW among many others. Miguel Faustmann is also an accomplished Set Designer having designed the sets for a majority of the Repertory productions over the years. Faustmann has been with Repertory Philippines for almost thirty years, and if anyone knows the ins and outs of theater, it is he. Also a skillful Director, Miguel Faustmann has helmed such shows as ROMANCE IN D, MISTER 50%, GAY BIRDS, CLIFFHANGERS, THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP, ACCOMPLICE and most recently NOISES OFF, WAIT UNTIL DARK and THE GAMES AFOOT.

Bart Guingona

Winner of the 2003 ALIW Award for Best stage Actor, he has directed and acted for most of Manila’s major theatre companies including the highly acclaimed The Crucible for Repertory, Julius Caesar for Gantimpala Theatre Foundation, Ang Kuripot for Tanghalang Pilipino and Blood Wedding for Dramatis Personae, The Maids for PETA. He has fulfilled 2 theater grants in London, one for theater direction and is presently artistic director and president of Actor’s Actors Inc (AAI). His body of work as director and writer also includes the multi-media celebration of the senses Rendezvous avec les Sense, FireWaterWoman with Ballet Philippines and Musical Theater Philippines. Recent works include Shopping and Fucking, Closer, Art, Oleanna and the musicals Promises, Promises, and The Last Five Years. His accomplished portrayals include Hamlet, Macbeth, John Proctor in The Crucible, Madame in The Maids, Jose Rizal in Teksto at Komentaryo and Oedipus the King as well a host of television, movie and commercial appearances. His eclectic choice of directorial material for AAI includes the farce The Nerd, and the complex Cocteau melodrama Les Parents Terribles, the all-male Taming of the Shrew and the smash hit musical Once on This Island. His philosophy is that theater should encompass all ideas however complex or simple, — that theater should be idea-driven. He recently directed the smash musical Children’s Letters to God and ART in Pilipino for AAI and starred in the long-running and widely acclaimed Repertory Phils. Production of Tuesdays With Morrie. He has also been responsible for conceptualizing, scripting and directing a variety of shows for corporations, institutions and events such as PECC, the APEC conferences in Hong Kong and Davos, the National Press Club’s Gridiron Night, Century Properties (Essensa, West of Ayala, Oxford Suites, Medical Plaza Ortigas), Coca Cola, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Total, Apec Business Advisory Council Conference, Ayala Malls (Nights at the Circus, The Magic of Curtis, Disney Princesses), The CCP Centennial Awards, the Centennial Celebration Flag Ceremony (in Kawit, Cavite; Sta. Barbara, Iloilo; Butuan City) the MediaNation Conferences, the Prejudice and Pride Conferences and countless others.

Joy Virata

As a Capricorn Goat Joy Virata has taken the rocky path of theater for forty two years appearing in over a hundred and fifty plays and musicals, directing, being REP’s Vice President for Audience Development, Associate Artistic Director, and Founder and Artistic Director of the Repertory Theater for Young Audiences. Her favourite roles include Piaf in PIAF, Evita in EVITA, Sister Amnesia in NUNSENSE, Florence Foster Jenkins in GLORIOUS, Titania in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and Portia in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE plus most of the comedies and farces that REP has been famous for. Her training includes university theater under Freddie Guerrero, a director’s seminar sponsored by the British Council in Middlesex, England and an eight-week workshop in Acting Shakespeare at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. However, her real training has been on the Repertory stage under the tutelage of Zeneida Amador. She has taken voice lessons from most of the famous Filipino voice teachers and enrolled at the UP Conservatory of Music for several years in voice performance. She has sung the roles of Tosca and Lady Macbeth in chamber opera. She also has a Master’s degree in Industrial Management from the University of the Philippines. She is grateful to her husband, Cesar, who has supported her in every possible way in the pursuit of her passion and to her children and grandchildren who do so as well. She eagerly awaits her first great-grandchild in May.

Julia Netta Vildzius Peña

Junie Peña was a graduate of Fordham University and American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) both located in New York City, USA. She holds mostly Board Advisory positions to several organizations which includes real estate and charity work. Some of these organizations are San Antonio Condominium Building Inc. (SACBI), Peña Y Cia Inc., Catholic Women’s Club, Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), Rotary Club of Makati West (RCMW), Likhang Sining, Tali Beach Concert for Environment and Repertory Philippines Foundation. Most of her charity work promotes scholarships for deserving youth, the care of abandoned children and the elderly, human security, democratization and people-to-people solidarity, motivates and encourages young artists to pursue their interest in painting, enhancing the young artists’ inherent skill in painting and serve as a pathway for nurturing the realm of artistic creation. As part of the board of REP Philippines, she aims to inspire, entertain, connect and confront audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new plays. Junie was given the Outstanding Rotary Ann Award by the Rotary Club of Makati West from year 2002 to 2015. Junie also excels in public speaking.


Lourdes “Dina” B. Orosa-Gaerlan

Ms. Dina Orosa-Gaerlan is the current General Manager of Ayala Multipurpose Cooperative which is recognized for its diversified services and operational excellence and with a solid foundation on Integrity, Trust, Customer Service and Corporate Social Responsibility. Dina gained her extensive experiences in Human Resource Management and Organizational Development from institutions like Family Savings Bank, FNCB Finance, Citytrust and Bank of Philippine Islands. She didn’t stop in just planning, directing, and coordinating the administrative functions of an organization, she even became a Consultant to Phil. Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in 2010 and Passenger Accident Management Inc. (PAMI) in 2011. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of BS Psychology from St. Paul College Quezon City and Fellow in Human Resource Management, Dina as a member of REP’s Board Appointees will surely help strengthen further its missions, visions and core values.

Gidget Tolentino

Gloria Tolentino, better known as Gidget, graduated BS Management in University of the Philippines in Iloilo. She worked for SGV, then Kingly Commodities (a HongKong based futures trading company) before moving to Repertory in 1990. Since then, she has remained involved in theater and in 2010 was appointed General Manager. She also worked as a sound technician for most REP musicals and has been Production Manager for countless REP productions. Although Gidget is a paid employee, she sits in the Board ex-officio, in the position of GM and CFO for Repertory. She is an integral asset to the company and the Board, deftly managing the crew, staff, finances and office.

Liesl Batucan – Managing Director

Liesl is currently the Managing Director of Repertory Philippines. Prior to this, she held the post of Associate Artistic Director of The Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP’s) resident theatre company Tanghalang Pilipino.  Liesl is an Aliw Hall of Famer for having been a three-time Aliw Award Winner for Best Actress for her roles in WAIT UNTIL DARK, A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS FILIPINO and  BALER SA PUSO KO. She is also a two-time Gawad Buhay Awardee for Best Actress in SWEENEY TODD and AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY.  With an extensive body of work with Repertory Philippines spanning a little over two decades and around 100 theatre productions, Liesl has showcased her versatility in such diverse roles as Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Audrey in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, Luisa in The FANTASTICKS, Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ, Philia in A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, Emily Webb in OUR TOWN, Amy in AMY’S VIEW, Portia in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, Juliet/Lady Capulet/Nurse in ROMEO AND JULIET, Beatrice/Hero in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, Theda Blau in IT HAD TO BE YOU, and a myriad other roles.   She appeared at CCP Tanghalang Pilipino’s MABINING MANDIRIGMA and PANGARAP SA ISANG GABI NG GITNANG TAG-ARAW (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). She also appeared in GOLDEN CHILD, AMERICAN HWANGAP, and STAGESHOW receiving citations and awards for these roles.  For the CCP, she directed BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL, as well as three family concerts featuring the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.  Liesl has performed Off-Broadway in New York, as well as in various concerts/musical productions here and abroad. She hosted an interactive television game show in Budapest, Hungary and has worked in local film and television with the country’s most prestigious directors and has lent her voice to countless radio ads and jingles. She has taught acting workshops in Manila, Cebu and Naga, and she has also donned the cap of Assistant Director for Repertory Philippines and Tanghalang Pilipino theatre productions. Liesl is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of the Philippines, former corporate finance consultant with SGV & Co., and former Treasurer of Repertory Philippines.

Mario Luza Bautista

Mario Bautista is the co-founder of the prestigious law firm Poblador Bautista and Reyes, established in 1994. He currently serves in the REP Board as Legal Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Mario is known to have played a key role in the impeachment trial of former President Joseph Estrada. He made a comeback as the lead private prosecutor of Chief Justice Renato Corona. Bautista was first approached by the defense panel, particularly by lawyer Eduardo Delos Angeles, to join their team. In the Estrada impeachment trial, it was Bautista who presented star witness Clarissa Ocampo, a banker who testified that she personally saw the former president sign a check as “Jose Velarde.” A strong supporter of the arts, Mario is honoured to be involved with REP.

Natalie Everett

Naths, as she is fondly called, is one of Rep’s busiest actors and current right hand to Joy Virata in the Children’s Theater. Last year she appeared in all five productions that Rep staged starting with THE GAMES AFOOT all the way until A LITTLE PRINCESS. Some of her other recent productions in Rep are THE SECRET GARDEN (where she played Martha / Alice / Mrs. Shelly), SCROOGE, THE PRODUCERS, and AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY. She also appeared in SWEENEY TODD, JEKYLL AND HYDE, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. With much gratitude, Naths has been part of Repertory Philippines’ Theater For Young Audiences as a Performer, an Assistant Director, and on occassion, Choreographer, and Dance Captain. She was in SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, PINOCCHIO, MULAN JR., ALICE IN WONDERLAND, CINDERELLA, ALADDIN, and SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL. Naths was also privileged to work with Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. In MISS SAIGON, where she covered the role of Gigi (London, Manila, Asian Tour, UK Nationals, UK Tam Tour), HEY MR. PRODUCER, and DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING. Her other theater credits include BLOOD BROTHERS, THE CHERRY ORCHARD, GAYBIRDS (Repertory Philippines), ONCE ON THIS ISLAND (Ephesus Teatron Group), UNDAUNTED (Stages), HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (both for Atlantis productions), KAOS (at the NPAT), WANDERS (PAGCOR), to name a few. Naths is most grateful for the opportunity to teach Musical Theater to aspiring teens, and wishes to impart her knowledge, and experiences to the next generation.

Joel Rufino A. Nuñez

 A graduate of the University of the Philippines, College of Law, Joel’s first foray into Rep was in South Pacific (1981), and has joined countless other musicals until he unofficially “retired” as Lun Tha in The King & I (1990). Joel has also done Rep’s Filipino adaptation of Gay Birds (2006), and since 2015 has been helping out Rep as an Observer-Director of its Board and as a member of the Rep Artistic Council. Joel toggles between Manila and New York and serves as Rep’s liaison for theater contacts in New York.


Our mission is to produce Live Theater that is excellent, resilient, entertaining, and more importantly to champion the integrity of the Filipino Artist and enrich the cultural life of the community in a sustainable manner. We also want to inspire, entertain, connect and confront audiences with theatrical productions that
range from the classics to new plays; train and sustain the next generation of theater artists as we have been doing for the last fifty years; provide workshops and programs to foster an environment for young artists to imagine and grow freely.

Through our seasonal plays, we want to create quality intimate theater and to inspire our community to realize the essential power of the theater to enlighten our culture. Be a thriving organization that is fiscally sound, and has endowed reserves to support its programming.


Repertory Philippines will strive to be the most indispensable premiere theater company in five years; to be the pre-eminent theater of choice and most successful theater company by 2021.

REP will make every effort to provide directors, writers, designers and actors with a safe environment to enhance their creative abilities and explore their talents, through the creation of live theatre.

For the last fifty years, we sought to promote and develop the performing arts for Philippine cultural growth. We have achieved this vision. We will continue to endeavor to be the PIONEER AND LEADER of Theater and Performing Arts in the Philippines through the production of professional quality shows, and the operation of high quality classes and workshops. To this end, we will start a school of Performing Arts, that encompasses dance, song and drama, so as to develop and train young students, broaden their imagination and inspire their spirit.

Through our Children’s Theatre, we will inspire and help children make theatre an active part of their lives. We envision a community where every child has access to drama and theatre; where every city has a theatre for young audiences; where every community has a youth theatre; where every school has a theatre arts curriculum. We envision a time when the full spectrum of the theatre arts becomes a pervasive part of our landscape. We celebrate the courage and creativity of those artists and educators who do this work even as we have connected, inspired, and supported them in their profession throughout our fifty years.

People embarking on the highly implausible and the seemingly impossible are more often than not considered “slightly mad” if not downright crazy. Yet it is from these people’s madcap minds that some of the greatest ideas are born. Repertory Philippines is one of them. In a world where only those with independent incomes could do theater and at a time when there was no theater industry let alone plays produced on a regular basis, six idealists thought to put up a theater group that would change all that.

They wanted a theater group that was peopled by trained professionals who could earn a decent living from their craft; that would mount commercially viable plays without sacrificing skill and artistry on a regular basis; and, where theater afficionados could enjoy the best of Broadway fare without actually going to Broadway. A pretty tall order by all accounts in 1967 – but Zeneida Amador, Baby Barredo, Leo Martinez, Tony and Monina Mercado and Buddy Paez marched to it! On a rainy evening in March of 1967, the fledgling theater company performed “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?” to an audience of sixteen… and the rest – as the cliché goes – is history.

Fifty years and over 443 productions later, Repertory Philippines has fulfilled all its initial goals…and then some.Through the years, Rep has consistently produced at least five productions a year, averaging at least 150 performances annually. These productions range from conventional and contemporary classics to frothy farces, deep drama and magnificent musicals. These include LES MISERABLES, MAN OF LA MANCHA, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, EVITA, EQUUS, AMADEUS, SWEENEY TODD, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and ROMEO AND JULIET, just to name a few.

In the past 15 years, Rep has also been reaching the youth through the Rep Theatre for Young Audiences… starting theater appreciation early through enjoyable and educational offerings such as PINOCCHIO, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN JR., JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, SEUSSICAL and many more. Moreover, the regularity and frequency of Rep productions has not only made possible the development of a theater audience, it has also enabled Repertory Philippines to effectively employ and train actors and production people. Proof positive of the quality of training at Rep is the number of “alumni” who have become household names in entertainment both locally and internationally – making their mark not only in theater but also in television, film and the concert scene. Many of these names have also gone on to form their own theater companies.

Considered the most prestigious theater company in the country, Repertory Philippines is a vital part of a thriving vibrant theater industry filling its specific niche as an actor oriented company; with a loyal following and an ever growing audience; and a truly special place in the hearts of theater-practitioners and theatergoers in the Philippines.


Founded in 1967 by a group of actors on the initiative of the late Zeneida A. Amador who was its President and Artistic Director until her death in 2005, REPERTORY PHILIPPINES FOUNDATION, INC., also known as “REP”, has often been called “the most professional English-speaking theater company in the country”. It is the only theater company that produces western plays – both modern and the classics – non-stop throughout the year except for the summer months when attention turns to acting workshops and their corresponding showcase productions. To this date it has staged 443 productions – each running from 12 to 60 performances. The roster of its productions include such titles as LES MISERABLES, THE KING AND I, PASSION, EVITA, ANNIE, MY FAIR LADY, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, SOUTH PACIFIC, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, CAROUSEL, PIRATES OF PENZANCE A CHRISTMAS CAROL, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, OLIVER, THE SECRET GARDEN and a host of others. One of its recent musical productions, MAN OF LA MANCHA, was called the best musical for 2005 and perhaps the best musical ever in this country.

At present REP has one regular season of three plays. Classics, comedies, dramas and sometimes a smallscale musical are a regular part of each season. The rest of the year is taken up by a musical for young audiences, and FInally a big Broadway musical production. Recently REP has taken to adapting at least one play and putting it in a Philippine setting although all the plays are performed in English. Some of the famous western plays that REP has done include AMADEUS, LES LIASONS DANGEREUSES, THE MOUSETRAP, AGNES OF GOD, M. BUTTERFLY, WOMAN IN BLACK, OUR TOWN, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, RUN FOR YOUR WIFE, TWO AND TWO MAKE SEX, THE LION IN WINTER, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, CACTUS FLOWER and many, many others.

The children are not forgotten. The REP THEATER FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES, now on its 20th year, stages professional productions of classic children’s musicals on weekends and during the week for schools. Ms. Joy Virata is its Founder and Artistic Director.

REP also opens summer workshops attended by more than 200 children and adults each summer.

But Repertory Philippines is not just a production outfit. It has also been the best-known training ground for actors having produced the likes of Lea Salonga who first appeared with REP when she was six years old and then played the lead in ANNIE when she was eight. She went on to play the lead in Cameron Mackintosh’s MISS SAIGON, winning awards in both London and New York for her performance and since then has been an international performer. Monique Wilson, another “Rep tot”, also starred in the same production and is at present based in Manila and travels the world over where she continues to pursue her career. The late Junix Inocian, Jonjon Briones, Red Concepcion, Cocoy Laurel, Maya Barredo, and Gia Macuja are just a few of others numbering about 40 who have appeared and are still appearing in international productions. REP continues to be the source of acting talent both in the Philippines and abroad.

To carry out its vision, REP maintains a full-time support staff of 10. Its present address is at Ecoville Executive Townhomes in Makati City. It began using a 200-seat theater on the 12th floor of the Insular Life Building on Ayala Avenue, moved to a 500-seat theater at the Shangri-la Plaza Mall which it named the William J. Shaw Theater, and then, when that theater was demolished, moved to the Carlos P. Romulo 400-seat theater in the RCBC Plaza. At present it rents the ONSTAGE THEATER in Greenbelt I in the Ayala Center.


Ms. Zeneida Amador, in an article she wrote profiling her company said: “Because REP is a non-stock, not-for profit foundation, it has never stinted in giving each production the best it has been able to. The money it makes from box-office sales and sponsorship grants have been ploughed back to production budgets to give each presentation the taste, the look and the sophistication that cosmopolites have become used to. Its sense of pride about one of the country’s products renders it at all times unable to settle for mediocrity and to daily reach for excellence.”

Further, by the regularity of its productions, REP is continuing its furtherance of the aims of art. That is to make people more sensitive, more aware, more ethical in their dealing with others, more compassionate and more just.
